Is Abstract Art a Modern Concept?

It is a common misconception that abstract painting only began to emerge in the late 20^th century. There were three art movements that contributed to its development, namely Expressionism, Impressionism and Romanticism. Impressionism, on the other hand, places emphasis on presenting its subject matter in a distant and vague form, often producing the effect of time passing. Romanticism holds closest to traditional art, although the contrast between color and design marks it as distinctively abstract.
